Nuggets from – “For Adults Only: Keys to Unlocking Your Destiny”

Most people wake up Monday through Friday and sometimes Saturday, to go to work and earn a paycheck. Then they take that paycheck and cash it so they can pay bills, buy food, clothing, etc. They may put some money aside for a “rainy day” or pay off some accumulated debt. That is pretty much the definition of their life: working, paying bills, and buying stuff. It is a never-ending cycle leading nowhere. Then one day unexpectedly, it is here, their final day on earth – death. As they look back over their life, it hits them like a ton of bricks that they never really lived.

Many live their life playing it safe, only to get to the end with a bag full of regrets and shattered dreams. This is one of the greatest tragedies of the human experience. When death comes knocking, your eyes are open wider than they have ever been but “Father Time” has caught up with you and there are no extensions available. Death is the ultimate “Wakeup Call.” Unfortunately, when it comes, it is too late to do what you could have, should have, or would have done. Well, consider this book to be your official “wakeup call before it is too late. Life is a one shot, non-negotiable privilege that we should not waste.

The Driving Force – Is it in you?

Destiny and the power contained within it is seen in one’s desires. Desire is an internal mechanism that will push you forward to achieve your Destiny. It is to the human soul as gas is to a car. Without it, you will go nowhere. We were created to be Destiny-driven, instead of being need-driven. This is why we came into this world with pre-installed software called gift(s) and desires – designed to take us to a place called Destiny, which equals success and fulfillment.

Desire also has the ability to give you “staying power” to overcome the challenges that automatically come as you pursue your Destiny. However, make sure the desire is lawful which leads me to this disclaimer: Every desire should be examined, but not every desire should be fulfilled. You may desire to hurt someone out of anger but that is a desire you should not fulfill. Therefore, every desire must be examined to ensure that it is lawful, ethical, and moral. Below are some definitions describing the power of Destiny:

Power = the ability to do or act; capability of doing or accomplishing something. Great or marked ability to do or act; strength; might; force.  – Dictonary.com

Passion = an outburst of strong emotion or feeling. The state of being acted upon or affected by something external, especially something alien to one’s nature or one’s customary behavior (contrasted with action). Boundless enthusiasm, as in playing a game, instrument, performance, etc.  – Dictonary.com

So much of what we see is subject to change and if given enough time, it will. However, what you see in your mind is more real than what you perceive with your five senses. There is nothing created by people that did not first start in someone’s mind as an idea or vision. Moving from recognizing what is in you to carrying it out requires having a vision. Your Destiny has to be clear in your mind if you are to fulfill it. If you cannot see where you want to go in life then it will be impossible to get there. You must have a vision of Destiny. Moreover, you have to make sure you picked the right vision. If you pick the wrong vision then you will pay a heavy price to accomplish that vision, versus the right one. You do not want to spend your life doing something that is not in line with your Destiny. Chances are you are already doing that.

Having a vision is crucial for a successful life. It gives your life direction and focus. It also reveals what it will take (cost) to get there. Having a vision will guide, guard and govern your life when you embrace it. Even those who fall on “hard times” will need a vision in order to move from despair to Destiny. This is why every parent should instill in their children an understanding of Destiny and purpose for their life. Moreover, a parent’s job is not finished until their child or children are mature enough to make intelligent and positive decisions, while accepting full responsibility when they do not. This does not come automatically when they turn 18. Part of my success today is due to what my parents taught me as a child.

Some believe that the answer for helping young people stay out of trouble is to create more programs. When I was growing up, we did not have recreation centers or programs to occupy our time. We used our imagination and the guidance of our parents to occupy our time. Young people do not need more programs to occupy their time. They simply need more vision. Unfortunately, most of us were not encouraged to follow our dreams or passions as children. Instead, we were told to get a job.

In addition, society has taught us to pursue money when we really should pursue our Destiny. Everything you need to succeed is already in you. It is like my daughter, who cannot read or write yet. However, the ability to do so is already in her. This is why she goes to school to learn and to bring out her natural abilities. Her mind is made to receive information and to comprehend (process) that information – enabling her to grow in her abilities. With time, she will not only learn how to read and write, but will master it.

In this natural process of learning, she will discover her own uniqueness. Throughout the years, her teachers and her mother and I will celebrate and encourage her to be her best. This is what our young people need today. They need adults in their lives who believe in them, adults who will take time to encourage and help them discover their true potential – Destiny. This is the key to their success and the future of the world. Unfortunately, the world classifies people based upon one of the following categories:

The Poor are typically those with or without a job and are barely making it financially. They work hard but have very little to show for their efforts. Life for them is a daily struggle with no end in sight.

The Middle Class are typically those with a career (professionals) and are doing okay financially. They are able to pay all their bills and live comfortably with a little money left over to save or take a vacation, every two years or so.

The Rich are typically those with a dream that employ the poor and middle class to fulfill that dream. They are doing very well financially with more than enough to meet their financial and material needs and the lives of those around them.

Which of these categories have you allowed society to label you?

Many people are cruising down the highway of life without a map (vision), confident they are going in the right direction. The fact that so many people are going in the same direction reinforces this assumption. However, as they travel they periodically see people driving pass them on the left, going in the opposite direction. Pride quickly rises up in them as they assume these people are going the wrong way. After all, there are millions of people doing what they are doing. “Not all these people can be wrong,” they say to themselves.

Regardless of their reasoning and vast knowledge of life, they continue to see people driving pass them on the left, going in the opposite direction. In addition, those going in the opposite direction are always alone. They are never traveling with or following a crowd. In fact, crowds are following them. Some consider them to be either crazy or trail blazers. Eventually, this phenomenon sparks curiosity in the observing driver, who now wants to understand what all of this means.

Unfortunately, fear quickly rises up within them and tells them to stay the course, because it is easier to do what everyone else is doing than to stand out from the crowd. As this person continues to follow the crowd, they begin to think that maybe the crowd is going the wrong way, and not those going in the opposite direction. This crowd may possibly be cruising down the highway of life without a map (vision). If so, then they cannot possible know where they are going.

“Therefore, why am I following them?” they say to themselves and immediately begin to slow down. Within seconds, they pull over to the side of the road to contemplate what to do next. Once you realize that you are going the wrong way, please do not continue to drive out of pride. Pull over, take a moment to think about your life and make the necessary changes. Type new directions into your GPS (mind and heart) and allow it to guide you to where you need to go – Destiny.

Another analogy is this; many live their lives like a ship on the sea without a rudder. As a result, every wave of social change and wind of immoral compromise, tosses them like a toy with no end in sight. The stormy rains (challenges of life) beat down upon them – forcing their square peg life to fit into the round hole of conformity. This process brings them far beneath their potential and far away from their Destiny.

Unfortunately, the world we live in is not tolerant of everyone becoming successful or rich, although there is enough money for everyone to live comfortably. However, having a lot of money should not be anyone’s ultimate goal in life. Many rich people have become slaves to their own prosperity. When the stock market is up, they are emotionally up. When the stock market is down, they are emotionally down. If the stock market plummets, so do they – splat on the sidewalk outside of their high-rise office building.

They made six-figures, had a nice company car, and a benefits package that most people do not know exist. They put their hopes and dreams into something that did not have their best interests at heart. In fact, it lied to them. It told them that all they needed to be happy was to make a lot of money and possess a lot of stuff. However, the more you have the more taxes, insurance and other fees you will have to pay to maintain or protect them. It can quickly become overwhelming to say the least. Many rich people have so much debt from impulse buying, to “Keep up with the Jones’,” that they are technically no better off than a person making less than 50k a year.

For many, “getting paid” is their only goal in life. They strive so hard and for so long to get money that it becomes an addiction. No matter how much they have, it is never enough. They prosper financially but their souls remain empty and void of life. Sadness hovers over them like dark clouds on what was supposed to be a sunny day (life). In all their pursuing, they failed to pursue their Destiny, which could have brought fulfillment for their soul, which cries out to them daily. The conclusion of a life lived this way is vanity and vexation of spirit. When money becomes your only pursuit in life, you really become poor in spirit – shallow.

You have to understand that money is merely a tool and should never become your identity. Money is a tool for living, helping others and fulfilling our Destiny. Unfortunately, many strive to accumulate a lot of stuff, thinking it will somehow add to their self-worth. The more they have the more valuable they feel. Their identity is based upon their material things rather than the content of their character. They fail to understand, that true value or lack of value is solely based upon one’s character – nothing more. This is important to know because we can only produce what we are on the inside whether good or bad.

Since success is relative, we should view it in the context of our Destiny. Only then will we know what true success looks like for us. When you really think about success, it is about what fulfills you and makes you glad that you are alive. It is usually the simple things in life, like watching a baby take his or her first steps. Then years later, watching that same child, walk across a stage to receive their high school diploma. Unfortunately, those who only measure success by money and material things seem more concerned with impressing people rather than impacting them.

“Destiny pulls us forward while the disappointments of our past try to drag us back; back into the mud of mediocrity and complacency. Our life soon becomes a tug-of-war of mental and emotional anguish until the final decision is made. We must resolve within our soul the question; do I go forward, retreat and give up, or simply stand still? My friend, there is only one logical answer to this question, that has plagued the minds of every human on earth – go forward. Embrace the passion that burns within your soul, because the pursuit of happiness is really the pursuit of Destiny.” – James A. Jimason,
